SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team once again showed it will go the extra mile - or three - to pick up a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles went into a third overtime period for a second straight game and prevailed again, this time in a 122-118 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night in the Otter Sports Center. Cal State L.A. (10-4, 4-3 CCAA) won its third straight game. The Golden Eagles were coming off a triple-overtime win over UC San Diego at home last Saturday night.
Vincent Camper poured in a career-high 40 points to lead six Golden Eagles in double figures. Camper, the CCAA Player of the Week last week, played 51 minutes and was a dominating force in the three overtime periods. Dejon Prejean and Demetrius Hazel scored 16 points each, Christofer Hart had 15 points, Christopher Mark had a big double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Tyler Polo had 12 points.
D'Shon Cannon had 37 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (2-11, 1-6). Augie Johnston had 24 points and Joe Mitchell had 21 points for the Otters, who also had six players score in double figures.
For the second straight game, the Golden Eagles saw a potential regulation victory dashed at the buzzer. After Hart hit two free throws to give Cal State L.A. a 92-89 lead with five seconds to go, Stephen Becker hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 95-92 lead early in the first overtime, but Cal State Monterey Bay opened up a 100-95 edge with 2:36 remaining. Mark hit one free throw to slice the deficit to four and Hart hit a big 3-pointer to make it 100-99 with 1:15 to go. After Cal State Monterey Bay hit a free throw, Camper scored a basket with 10 seconds left to send the game into a second overtime.
The Otters grabbed a three-point lead, 108-105, with 21 seconds left in the second overtime, but a Camper layup made it 108-107 with eight seconds to go. After Cal State Monterey Bay made only one of two free throws, Camper made a driving layup with one second left to send the game into a third overtime.
The Otters took their last lead of the game, 111-109 early in the period, but layups by Hart and Mark put the Golden Eagles ahead, 113-111. After Camper hit another layup to make it 115-111, Jose Sanchez hit a 3-pointer to pull the Otters to within 115-114 with 1:36 left.
Polo, though, came right back and nailed a 3-pointer with 1:02 remaining to put the Golden Eagles up, 118-114. Camper hit four free throws down the stretch to keep the Otters at bay.
Both teams shot extremely well in the game. Cal State L.A. made 54.8 percent of its shots, including half of its 3-point attempts. Cal State Monterey Bay made 55.0 percent of its shots and knocked down 14 of its 31 attempts from behind the 3-point arc. The Otters made 16 of its 23 free-throw tries.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 41-35 rebounding edge and forced 22 turnovers while committing 13.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a game at San Francisco State.
